Explore and More in Buffalo, New York is a world-class children’s museum that celebrates the power of child-led play. With four floors of fun to explore, the 43,000 sq. ft. museum sits at the crossroads between replica canals and bridges that have become year-round community destinations. The museum reflects that sense of place with thoughtfully crafted exhibits that help children develop a deeper sense of our world, our community and their place in it in a fun and engaging way for children and adults alike.
Explore and More currently has about 40 full and part time staff combined, at least five of whom have a developmental disability. The museum also has several volunteer groups with developmental disabilities who work with them on a regular basis. COO Jerry Silvis has 13 years of experience employing people with developmental disabilities. Explore and More started employing people with developmental disabilities when Silvis became COO of the Museum five years ago.
What interested you in employing people with developmental disabilities in your workforce?
Explore and More: I always knew disabilities came in a very wide range, then one day, I was approached by Autism Services and learned much more about disabilities and what they had to offer in their job placement program. I gave it a try, and the rest is history. I’ve been employing staff placed with them and other similar agencies for years now.
What has surprised you most about employing someone with a developmental disability?
Explore and More: Wow, hard to describe this one, as I’ve been surprised so many times. A few examples would be their dependability, the joy and excitement they receive from working and earning their own paycheck, the pride they put into and get out of accomplishment, and their interaction with other staff.
What advice would you give to another employer considering employing people with developmental disabilities?
Explore and More: I would really advise them to give it a try and see how well they perform when they are trained in a job that matches their capabilities.
What difference has the employment of people with developmental disabilities made in your organization?
Explore and More: We are all about diversity, equity, and inclusion. Employing people with disabilities shows our audience that everyone can and will succeed if only given a chance.
