Dear Friends and Colleagues,
It’s August and that means it is almost time for the Great New York State Fair! This year the festivities will kick off in Syracuse beginning Wednesday, August 20, and run through September 1. You won’t want to miss it!
Once again, OPWDD will be in the Science & Industry Building throughout the run of the Fair and is looking forward to meeting and interacting with you and all fairgoers to familiarize them with our agency’s services and supports, our many rewarding career opportunities, and, most importantly, our mission.
This year I am excited to announce that the theme for our display is “Everyone deserves a richer life.” It is a message we take to heart because it is truly at the forefront of everything we do. Living a rich life means something different to everyone, and that’s why living up to our mission means being person-centered and listening to people when they tell us what they want in life for themselves. At the Fair, we’ll be asking you, “What makes a richer life?” We want to know what makes you the best version of yourself and makes your life rewarding. We can’t wait to see the variety of answers that come in, so we can all learn from one another.
It was only a few months ago we celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Willowbrook Consent decree and the evolution of inclusion over the last 50 years. We are so proud in 2025 to be able to join together at an accessible event like the Great New York State Fair; the state’s largest party, and all of us are invited.
Similar to last year, the Fair will again offer a sensory-friendly room throughout its run and a Sensory Friendly Day, when many rides on the Midway will operate without lights. At the same time, sounds, music, and public address announcements throughout The Fair will be reduced or limited to accommodate those with sensitivities to sound. This is scheduled for Wednesday, August 27, from 9:00 a.m. through 1:00 p.m. See the complete list of other Special Days and learn about accessibility at the Fair so you can plan your trip!
