Cory's path to finding a job has been challenging but also filled with growth and support. His story shows how hard work can lead to success.
Cory started in Wildwood’s job training program in 2019 and aimed to find paid work. When Cory first joined the program, he was shy and didn't talk much, and he struggled with meeting new people. Despite these difficulties, he kept pushing himself to learn the skills he needed for a job. He volunteered at places like Meals on Wheels and the Schenectady Museum, where he learned about money management, communication, and taking initiative.
In November 2022, Cory moved to the Employment Training Program, where he began working with a job coach to figure out his career goals. Although the process took longer than expected because of staffing issues, Cory stayed committed and focused.
By January 2025, Cory was ready for job development, and in March, he began a paid internship at Peter Harris Clothes. During this three-month internship, he proved to be reliable, showed initiative, and became more confident. His efforts paid off when the store officially hired him in June 2025.
"I love my job," says Cory. "I like to make money so I can buy things in the store."
Cory has made amazing progress since starting this journey. He now takes charge of his work tasks, feels comfortable talking to his supervisors and coworkers, and has formed strong relationships at work. He initially worked one day a week, but because of his dedication, his schedule was increased to two days a week.
"Cory continues to show great progress," says his supervisor, Shannon. "He has increased his production rate, and we created a goal sheet for him to track how many inventory boxes he completes in each shift."
Cory’s story highlights how every step in the job process builds on the last one. With patience and determination, it is possible to reach competitive employment.
"We are thrilled as Cory's parents to see him achieve this opportunity," they said. "We are grateful for the support he has received."
