OPWDD Launches New Community Inclusion Campaign Encouraging People to "Get Together"

08/22/18

Dear Friends and Colleagues:

As New Yorkers, we know there is strength in numbers and that working together is the best way to accomplish any task, goal, or initiative. We believe that everyone has a place in the community and has valuable contributions to make.

In the spirit of togetherness and community integration, OPWDD is launching the Get Together awareness campaign, which aims to promote unity in the community. Inspired by the 1960s song of the same name, Get Together is about encouraging people to come together to achieve full community inclusion for everyone.

As people with developmental disabilities continue to integrate into community settings, it is increasingly important to educate and encourage acceptance and appreciation of what they bring to the community to ease the transition. By encouraging people to get together, get to know one another and grow together, we are building a future where similarities rather than differences are the focus.

We need the power of people to help spread the word. You can participate beginning today in a number of ways:

  •  Like OPWDD’s Facebook page and add our People Power frame to your profile picture! (Once you "like" our page, our frame will appear under "Frames from Pages You Like" after you click the camera icon to edit your profile photo and select "add frame.")
  • Like and share OPWDD’s “Get Together” video featuring the band Flame on social media. Be sure to include the hashtags #GetTogether #PeoplePower and #NYSOPWDD.
  • Share our sample social media posts on your Facebook, Twitter or Instagram accounts.
  • Share photos of yourself “getting together” with people of all abilities out in the community. Don’t forget to use the hashtags #GetTogether #PeoplePower and #NYSOPWDD.
  • Request a People Power window sticker for your car, home or business by emailing [email protected].

Don’t forget to stop by the OPWDD display at The Great New York State Fair in Syracuse August 22nd – September 3rd in the Science and Industry Building. Come see how the power of people can help us all get together!

Sincerely,
