OPWDD Launches Campaign to Promote Community Inclusion and Encourage Acceptance of People with Disabilities

Get Together Campaign, Inspired by 1960s Song, Encourages Focus on Similarities Rather Than Differences

The New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) today announced a statewide awareness campaign promoting unity and inclusion in communities across the state.

The campaign, called Get Together, was inspired by the 1960s song of the same name famously performed by The Youngbloods. Get Together is about encouraging people to come together to achieve full community integration for EVERYONE.

The fight for rights and freedoms that resounded through the 60s still lives strong among New Yorkers today. All New Yorkers, regardless of race, gender, religion, sexual orientation or ability level, deserve the opportunity to live, work, and realize their dreams within the community. By encouraging people to get together, get to know one another and grow together, we are building a future where similarities rather than differences are the focus.

New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) Acting Commissioner Kerry Delaney said, “Over the years, OPWDD has assisted people with developmental disabilities to integrate into neighborhoods and communities through housing opportunities, employment programs and other activities and initiatives, and we continue that mission today. As people with developmental disabilities continue to transition out of more restrictive settings, such as developmental centers, into community-based homes and more independent lifestyles, it is increasingly important to educate and encourage acceptance and appreciation of what they bring to their communities.”

The Get Together campaign was launched in coordination with opening day of the New York State Fair, but will continue throughout the year. People across the state can show their support in a number of ways:
