MERCEDES’ FAVORITE OR MOST REWARDING PART ABOUT BEING A DSP:

Mercedes says the most important part about being a DSP is when the individuals she works with in art class smile when their artwork is displayed around the building. “They get the greatest validation from their interpretation of art. Those moments I treasure and that makes my day,” she adds.

ABOUT MERCEDES:

Ruth Mohammed, Developmental Assistant 3, says Mercedes has worked for the Staten Island DDSOO for 22 years, and has been assigned to the day program for the past eight. “Mercedes comes to work every day with enthusiasm and compassion. The individuals come to Mercedes throughout the day for advice or to share a life experience with her,” Mohammed says.

Mercedes, she adds, is a team player who is very sensitive to the needs of the people she supports. “Mercedes teaches art and puts this artwork on display, fostering in individuals a sense of pride and accomplishment. Mercedes also uses her art skills to keep our program enrichment beautiful,” says Mohammed.

“Mercedes treats everyone well, but especially the people we support. Mercedes makes herself available to interpret or translate for Spanish-speaking individuals and families. She goes out of her way to help the individuals accomplish their dreams. Mercedes is well-loved and respected by both staff and individuals,” she says.
