THE NOMINEE’S FAVORITE OR MOST REWARDING PART ABOUT BEING A DSP:

Christal John believes in OPWDD’s mission of ‘helping people with developmental disabilities live richer lives’ and enjoys helping the people she supports to do just that.

ABOUT CHRISTAL:

“Christal embodies our mission statement when it comes to helping the individuals we serve live richer lives,” says Calandra Flermius, Team Treatment Leader.

“I previously worked with Christal when she was a DSAT,” says Flermius. “She was always eager to work and assist the individual she worked with.”

“Christal shows genuine concern for the people in the home where she works,” adds Flermius. “When there is an incident at the home, Christal provides all the required documents in a timely manner. If she is not sure of something, she will ask questions. Over the years that I have worked with Christal, I have seen a tremendous amount of growth in her. She has taken on her new job as DA1 with great enthusiasm.”

What sets Christal apart from others is her genuine concern for the people she works with, says Flermius. “She has approached me on several occasions to inquire about how to get things for the people in her care. She is a very dedicated worker and ensures that management is updated on the daily activities of the home. Christal is eager to learn and has been very proactive. She is very organized and stays on top of her work.”

Flermius says Christal is sensitive to the needs to the people she cares for, and goes above and beyond her job responsibilities to ensure they get what they need.

“Her direct supervisor tells me it is wonderful to have Christal working in the home,” Flermius adds. “Christal will ensure that all the individuals’ needs are met and will work hard to obtain the things they want. She does the job because she enjoys the job.”
