Core Competencies Orientation:

CORE Competencies Orientation Video – Revised 11-2014
The Orientation Core Competencies Video is a video that can be used to introduce the competencies to an agency’s DSPs, Supervisors, Administrators, or others.  The Orientation Competencies Video is used with the Orientation Core Competencies Video Manual and additional handouts when delivering the training.

Redefining the Role of the DSP:

Redefining the Role of the DSP Video – Revised 11-2014
This video is the second in a series of video training programs to teach DSPs, FLSs, other manager and clinicians how to utilize the Competencies, the Code of Ethics and the Empowerment Strategies to best support people with disabilities. It follows the use of the Orientation Core Competencies Video which introduces the Competencies and the Code of Ethics. The Transformation Core Competencies Video shows a number of scenes demonstrating the difference between being a caregiver and being a support professional. Each scene is shown both ways.

How to Supervise Using the Core Competencies and Code of Ethics – Revised 4-2015
To best support DSPs in adhering to the Code of Ethics, the Core Competencies, and the Empowerment Strategies, their Front Line Supervisors (FLSs) need to continuously provide supervision that supports the attainment of skills delineated in the aforementioned documents. This video training program teaches specific supervision strategies by showing a seasoned supervisor supervising two staff who are learning how to implement the Code, Competencies, and Empowerment Strategies. Subsequent scenes are also shown where the two staff effectively utilize the skills learned in supervision to improve their work with the individuals. Exercises are included towards the end of the training to enable FLSs to practice the supervision strategies.

What Families Need to Know: The Changing Roles and Expectations of a Direct Support Professionals - Revised 5-2015
Families of people with disabilities are rightfully concerned about the quality of staff who are working with their family member.  The NY State Office for People with Developmental Disabilities agrees with these family concerns and have adopted the NY State Code of Ethics and Core Competencies to address these concerns. This video will illustrate from a family’s point of view the importance of this higher level of competency.

Demystifying the Performance Evaluation Process 
As mandated by OPWDD, DSPs will be evaluated using the DSP Core Competencies evaluation tool. This process will commence in April 2016 with the annual evaluations completed one year after and the initial evaluations also being completed for new employees. There will be trainings conducted into the next year and beyond in regions across the state on how to utilize the tools and how to give an evaluation that enhances the good to excellent worker's morale while also providing a clear message to underperforming staff on what they need to do to meet the competencies standard of performance. Very concrete strategies will be presented and attendees will have the opportunity to practice these strategies in small group role plays.

Informed Decision Making 
This staff training video shows a number of scenes of individuals needing various levels of support while making informed decisions. A multi-step process that staff can utilize while supporting informed decisions is highlighted in the video. Also reviewed is the importance of staff keeping an open mind and not imposing their values, while utilizing active listening techniques.
