Autism Platform

Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are on the rise today, affecting children in unprecedented numbers. Since 1990, the number of people OPWDD serves who are diagnosed with ASDs has expanded by 500 percent! Today, these individuals represent more than 17 percent of our service population. And the curve is steeply rising.

State service agencies are grappling with how to respond with supports and services that meet the needs of this increasing population.

Since 2008, OPWDD has been working diligently to implement its Autism Platform, a comprehensive slate of initiatives intended to specifically address the needs of people on the autism spectrum within a service system that supports individuals with a wide range of diagnoses. In 2010, OPWDD revised its Autism Platform to reflect the recommendations of the report of the New York State Interagency Task Force on Autism.

This part of the OPWDD Web page describes the Autism Platform and the progress being made on its numerous initiatives. It also contains a convenient link to New York State's newest autism resource, NYacts, a New York State Web site dedicated to providing information about ASDs and the supports and services available from New York State service agencies. We hope these online resources will help families and individuals understand how New York State is responding to the needs of those with ASDs and connect them to the information and services they need.
