About Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)

SNAP is a federally funded program overseen by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).  SNAP is intended to relieve hunger and malnutrition among low income households by providing a supplemental payment used for food purchases only.

The breakdown of the program is as follows:

  • The USDA oversees SNAP benefits for all the states.
  • The New York State Office of Temporary Disability Assistance (NYS OTDA) Office oversees the SNAP Program for all of New York State.
  • The local Department of Social Services (DSS) Offices assist individuals with their SNAP needs for each county within NYS.
