About Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)

SNAP is a federally funded program overseen by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). SNAP is intended to relieve hunger and malnutrition among low income households by providing a supplemental payment used for food purchases only.
The breakdown of the program is as follows:
- The USDA oversees SNAP benefits for all the states.
- The New York State Office of Temporary Disability Assistance (NYS OTDA) Office oversees the SNAP Program for all of New York State.
- The local Department of Social Services (DSS) Offices assist individuals with their SNAP needs for each county within NYS.
