Overview

If a person wants OPWDD services, the following are legally responsible for the cost of care:

  • the person
  • their spouse if married
  • their parents or legal guardian (if the person is under 21 years old) and
  • any person managing the person’s money

If a young adult (under 21 years old) does not live with their parents, the parents are not legally responsible for the cost of OPWDD services. This applies even if the person receiving OPWDD services visits periodically.
