Overview
If a person wants OPWDD services, the following are legally responsible for the cost of care:
- the person
- their spouse if married
- their parents or legal guardian (if the person is under 21 years old) and
- any person managing the person’s money
If a young adult (under 21 years old) does not live with their parents, the parents are not legally responsible for the cost of OPWDD services. This applies even if the person receiving OPWDD services visits periodically.
Certain OPWDD services are covered by OPWDD’s Liability for Services regulations. These services include:
- Services provided in ICF/IDD facilities
- Residential Habilitation delivered in Individualized Residential Alternatives (IRAs), Community Residences (CRs), and Family Care
- Day Habilitation
- Care Management and other service coordination services
- Day Treatment Services
- Community Habilitation
- Prevocational Services
- Supported Employment Services (SEMP)
- Respite Services
- Blended and Comprehensive Services, including any covered services provided under OPTS (Options for People Through Service)
