REGION: 6 – Long Island

Position:  Developmental Assistant II

Years of Service: 18

Yolanda Trent was named one of the Long Island DDSOO’s 2024 DSPs of the Year due to the patience, creativity and dependability she always displays while doing her work.

“Yolanda has been an excellent advocate for the people she supports,” says Team Treatment Leader Tolkira Bernard. “She is a great asset to the entire residential team, always coming up with fresh ideas to keep everyone fully engaged and safe, and ensuring everyone is on track with their goals.”

“With her infectious attitude, the people she works with as well as staff are drawn to her,” Bernard continues. “Yolanda has shown that working in a residence where behaviors may be complex, her voice and personality alone is enough to calm down those tough situations.”

What sets Yolanda apart is that she truly cares, says Bernard. Even when she is busy, Bernard says Yolanda makes time to ensure that she provides a person-centered approach to each person in her care.

“She takes the time out to listen and follows up as well as advocates,” Bernard says. “Yolanda is able to make awesome connections with family members and incorporate them into the planning process, as well.”

Bernard adds that Yolanda is a great advocate for the people served.

“Her vibrant personality and commitment to ensuring that the people in our care are provided with person-centered inclusivity is remarkable,” she adds. “Yolanda truly recognizes people for the individuals they are. This helps the people in our care to live a richer life.

“She leads by example,” says Bernard. “Yolanda Trent has been a great asset to the team.”
